Our Little Cabin Kitchen (with an IKEA hack!)

The specified kitchen area is little and centred all around a mid-peak window (174 cm vast). Even so we had various criteria: we desired a sink, fridge, tiny freezer, a lot of food storage and a recycling area. Detect that I have not stated a stove or oven.

We discovered early on that setting up a stove would signify it would turn into a property in its have proper and would have electrical energy / h2o bill implications (gaaaah!) so we determined we’d use the stove in the most important cottage for now. Nonetheless, there are quite a few alternatives shifting forward which incorporate a gas barbecue, outdoor kitchen area or even one particular of IKEA’s pop up stoves. We will see!

Style

We explored several unique kitchen makes, but to be straightforward, we simply just could not believe that how a great deal even the tiniest of kitchens cost (have you observed this much too?) and because this is our second (little) property, they have been all above our finances, so we had to get creative instead!

When you are on a tight spending plan, I feel IKEA kitchens are terrific. I am a massive fan of utilizing them for the fundamentals and then pepping them up by splurging on the aspects like the faucet, handles and worktop. This is what we did in the main cottage kitchen several yrs back, and I’ve been so delighted with it!
I also believe the free IKEA kitchen scheduling assistance is fantastic (no, this is not sponsored by the Swedish giant, I assure!)  However, I was hoping to include a handful of personal touches, so I turned to my expensive close friend and interior designer Helen Sturesson for advice on how to include hand-developed shelves etc. And she sketched the above design.

Prepared to just take a glance at the benefits and obtain out additional about the aspects?

Results

Worktop

I might have liked a serious stone worktop, but again our finances didn’t really arrive at for that now. I was truly content to locate this laminate worktop at Hornbach. Just one working day, it’s possible we will swap it out for genuine stone, but I like this one for now!
I imagine a superior excellent, beautiful faucet is 1 of the most essential elements of a kitchen area. It helps make this kind of a big difference to the all round experience! We opted for the CRISTINA Rubinetterie CRIKT501 less than window kitchen mixer in brushed aged brass to match the rest room taps. I appreciate the complete!

Handles

I was so content to obtain these Cabinet Knob Helix – with a modern industrial vibe by Beslag On line (they have a load of attractive knobs, hooks and household furniture legs in their collection and market all over Europe).  The antique bronze matches the tap perfectly too!

Shelves

The open shelves ended up constructed by hand with oak slabs from Hornbach. I have to say, irrespective of the faff, these are my favourite section of the kitchen – and so useful for cups and glasses and other items we use all the time.

If we had mounted a stove to the proper, we wouldn’t have been in a position to have these shelves there as we would have required to insert a fan (I just required to level this out in case you happen to be scheduling to do a little something similar). Maybe in the long run, if we come to a decision to get a stove, we will have to do absent with the higher right ones (sniff, sniff!).

Lights

An necessary factor – good lights! In the earlier mentioned image you can capture a glimpse of the delicate, Strömlinje LED mild from IKEA which is connected to the wall switch and also has a remote management. The lighting is superb, I have to say!

We made just one miscalculation. And that is that I really should have made use of a single panel rather of two on the front of the fridge (reduce-centre). I received myself into a bit of a pickle with doorway handles – and may have employed some photoshop trickery with this to exhibit you how the finish result will search with the knobs! Nonetheless, in the lengthy phrase I believe I am going to swap the two drawer fronts out to a one unit. What do you believe?

A number of other points:

We do have a kettle (that’s why all the teapots and many others) – it is really just not in shot!

The extendable desk and chairs are from Danish brand Skovby (see my post about them right here) and the ladder – which can be moved across to the kitchen area, was constructed by a community carpenter. You can come across all the info about the wood flooring and panelling (by Norrlands Trä) in my publish in this article.

I hope you like our small kitchen area as considerably as we do!

If you have any queries, please give me a shout in the comments below and I might be happy to aid.

Have a great weekend all, see you Monday!

Niki
